Everything you might have wanted to know about removable dentures, but no one ever told you

31/10/2019

International scientific studies show that 17% of patients wearing a removable denture claim that they eat better when not using it, while 29% only eat soft or blended food. These data show that almost half of the persons wearing dentures are not pleased with their situation.

In order to be pleased with your denture, you need to:
  • have enough bone and gum on which to place the denture
  • not have high aesthetic requirements and expectations
  • not have high expectations in terms of talking
  • be resigned to having a voluminous object in your mouth
  • be willing to give up certain types of food
  • tolerate daily discomforts, such as pain, burning, choking, instability
  • be aware to face their long-term issues

Therefore, you may end up spending some of your savings to find yourself in a state that is not significantly better than the one before, which at least didn’t cost you anything.

Has it ever happened to you not to be able to eat what you like, such as meat or raw vegetables? Or to refuse an invitation to lunch or dinner because of the shame or embarrassment felt during the meal? Or do you happen to have digestion problems which require medication?

I am sure that you have been told by your dental specialist that the problem it’s you, you can’t adapt or your tongue moves too much, or your gum isn’t strong enough or your bone isn’t sufficient ... or your dentist tells you that it is only a matter of time and that you will get used to it or that it is normal, since it is a “removable ” denture.

Or would a simple REBASING solve all the problems? However, despite all these, the situation did not improve significantly and you had to go see your dentist many times, because the denture hurt and had to be adjusted, and thus you got back to the initial situation, at most.

We can assure you that it is not your fault, because there are situations, most of the time, where REMOVABLE DENTURES cannot function properly and cannot solve your problems.

Especially when it comes to lower dentures, they are ALMOST never able to allow those who wear them to eat and live a peaceful life, because, unlike the upper ones in which they lean on the entire palate, they have very little gum surface to support them; moreover having to “co-habit” with the tongue, one of the strongest and most developed muscles of our body that tends to move it, is mostly unbearable and uncontrollable; upper removable dentures instead have a greater stability thanks to the greater surface of support of the palate but, on the other hand, they are much more cumbersome, often induce a feeling of vomiting and block the taste receptors on the palate, thus diminishing the taste of food.

Many people were not told this when they were suggested removable dentures as a definitive solution to their problems, and now they have to live in suffering and discomfort.

This stems from the fact that most “old-school” dentists prefer to offer remedies that they have been using for decades and make them feel safer than the best treatment plan for the patient, even when this is simpler and faster and solves their problems better.

The only truly effective and safe solution if a toothless person wants to enjoy the pleasure of eating again and live a peaceful life is to use dental implant overdentures, which guarantee a safe return to the best conditions, both aesthetically and functionally.

This way, you can actually:
  1. abandon old voluminous and uncomfortable prostheses that cause pain, burns or choking;
  2. eat again with the same efficiency (90%) as if you had your natural teeth, so you can enjoy the taste of food and avoid any problem related to insufficient intake of fibre, vitamins, mineral salts;
  3. smile again, showing you naturally looking teeth, regain confidence in yourself, without looking “sad” anymore;
  4. avoid facing the risk of depression, which diminishes people’s life expectancy and drastically reduces their quality of life;
  5. avoid bone loss in the upper and lower jaw.
